LIBRARY
Even with their contributions towards the economic development of the Mano River basin (Sierra Leone, Liberia & Guinea), the kissi societies still endure underdevelopment. The availability, accessibility and affordability of the three fundamental basic necessities of life (healthcare, clean drinking water and electricity) is still a challenge. A significant number school going children sit on hard cold unpaved floors in tents, roofed with palm leaves, which they call schools. There are only few trained and qualified teachers in most of these schools. One major contributing factor to the high rate of illiteracy is poverty as many parents can’t afford to buy uniforms not to talk of textbooks. Furthermore, there are no libraries, no modern innovative learning materials or recreational/leisure centers. Teenage pregnancy among school going children is also on the rise in these poor communities.
In order to address some of these challenges, KISDO set out a priority goal to promote quality education in these deprived societies especially for women and girl child. This goal was achieved in 2018 by establishing a library complex in a conducive learning environment in Koindu town, Kailahun district. This facility is serving the Mano River Basin environs. Recommended textbooks are available for primary, secondary and university students. In addition, there are religious, novel, history and other extracurricular books both in English and French. Moreover, there are audio and visual materials.
We thank and appreciate all donors and well-wishers over the years.
However, we are still appealing for more donating in cash or kind.
The following items will be appreciated: BOOKS, STATIONARY, COMPUTERS, GAMES, AUDIO AND VISUAL LEARNING MATERIALS, PHOTOCOPIES, PRINTER, POWERPOINT PROJECTORS and SCREENS.
